Pete and Me Weren’t Meant to Be
November 27th, 2007 by admin
I spent the Thanksgiving weekend in Hamilton, NY - a tiny town in middle of nowhere about 40 miles from Syracuse. When I wasn’t playing board games with my in-laws, I was sitting in the local hotspot - a coffeshop called “The Barge” working and screwing around on the Internet. Between Friday and Sunday I probably spent 10 hours there.
Back at work on Monday morning, my head almost exploded when I read the following in Peter King’s Monday Morning Quarterback:
Coffeenerdness: You want a good, strong, not overly oppressive cup of coffee? I mean, borderline French Roast, with about 75 percent of the bite? Colgate Blend, from The Barge in Hamilton, N.Y. Drank it most of the weekend, and I’m going to have order some more.

Good lord in heaven above - I was stuck in the middle of NOWHERE, avoiding a “family trip” to Utica by hiding in a coffeshop - and Peter King was just feet away, swirling a cup of coffee in his mouth like a fine Bordeaux? (note to SI: A large cup of coffee costs $1.65 at The Barge - don’t believe any expense reports that say otherwise).
For some reason, our meeting was not meant to be. Perhaps the Gods of journalism did not want such dynamic literary forces colluding - one an untrained hack who writes short blurbs, simple observations and posts them online - and the other a guy who writes a blog. Whatever the reason, the forces of nature did not want me to have a photo not even the best L.A. paparazzo has been able to take - The PK Trifecta - a picture of Peter King with his daughter AND drinking coffee (I shudder to think of the value).
Next year is his daughter’s senior year at Colgate, and I can assure you that I will be back at The Barge next Thanksgiving - sitting in the front waiting for the father of the most famous field hockey player in America…
